  • The PM of India has released the result of the 4th cycle of all India tiger estimation- 2018 on the occasion of global tiger day - 2019.
  • The Census Risen to 2967 from 2226 in 2014 an increase of 33% in four years.
  • India achieved the target of doubling the tiger before four years(deadline in 2022).

Need for Tiger Conservation

  • Tiger - top of the food chain and referred to as "umbrella species".
  • More than 80% of the world's wild tigers are in India.

Key Findings

  • Top performer: Madhya Pradesh (526) followed by Karnataka (524) and Uttarakhand (442).
Increase in tiger population:
Madhya preadesh (71%) > maharashtra (64%) > Karnataka (29%).
  • Worst performers: Chhattishgarh and Mizoram saw a decline in the tiger population.
    • greater conservation efforts are needed on "critical vulnerable" northeast hills and Odisha.
  • Tiger sanctuaries: An evolution of India's 50 tiger sanctuaries were also released along with the 4th national tiger estimation.
    • Panch reserve tiger (Madhya Pradesh) recorded the maximum number of tigers followed by the Periyar tiger reserve of Kerala.
    • sathyamangalam tiger reserve (Tamil Nadu) "maximum improvement" since 2014.
    • The Dampa (Mizoram) and Rajaji (Uttrakhand) reserves are bottom in terms of tiger count.
    • No tiger - BUXA (West Bengal), palamau (Jharkhand) and Dampa (Mizoram) reserves.

  • Global Tiger Day
    • observed 1st time in 2010 at st. Petersberg tiger summit in Russia
    • celebrated annually on 29th July.
