Coronavirus

  • Total coronavirus cases have crossed 95,000 globally, with over 3,200 deaths. In India, a man from Ghaziabad UP became the 30th person testing positive. Efforts are on to bring back Indians stranded in Iran, the health minister informed Parliament today.

About Coronavirus:

  • Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).
  • Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.
  • Also called COVID-19)

Symptoms

The symptoms depend on the type of coronavirus and how serious the infection is. If you have a mild to moderate upper-respiratory infection such as the common cold, your symptoms may include:
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Cough Sore throat Fever
  • Not feeling well overall
  • Some coronavirus can cause severe symptoms. The infection may turn into bronchitis and pneumonia, which cause symptoms such as,
Fever, which may be quite high if you have pneumonia Cough with mucus Shortness of breath Chest pain or tightness when you breathe and cough, Severe infections are more common in people with heart or lung diseases, people with weakened immune systems, infants, and older adults.

Transmission

Human coronaviruses most commonly spread from an infected person to others through:
  • the air by coughing and sneezing.
  • close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands.
  • touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands.
  • rarely, faecal contamination.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS):

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a serious form of pneumonia.
Infection with the SARS virus causes acute respiratory distress (severe breathing difficulty) and sometimes death.
Expand Section SARS is caused by a member of the coronavirus family of viruses (the same family that can cause the common cold).
It is believed the 2003 epidemic started when the virus spread from small mammals in China.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS):

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a severe respiratory illness that mainly involves the upper respiratory tract.
It causes fever, coughing, and shortness of breath.
About 30% of people who have gotten this illness have died.
Some people only have mild symptoms.
MERS is caused by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
It was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and then spread to many countries.
Most cases were spread from people who travelled to the Middle Eastern countries.

How to protect yourself?

There are currently no vaccines available to protect you against human coronavirus infection.

-You may be able to reduce your risk of infection by doing the following:
  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Does it impact only humans?

Apart from human beings, coronaviruses can affect mammals including pigs, cattle, cats, dogs, martens, camels, hedgehogs and some birds.

Why is it called the Wuhan Virus?

The first cases emerged in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province.
On December 31 last year, authorities confirmed that a large number of patients with unexplained pneumonia were admitted in hospitals in the city.

Q) Is the recent strain fatal?

Since it's a new strain, there is no specific vaccine that can treat it. However, according to the WHO, "many of the symptoms can be treated & therefore treatment based on the patient's clinical condition". However, it has already killed over 3000 globally.

Q) What steps have been taken so far to check its spread?

The Chinese govt initially locked down Wuhan - the epicentre of the virus outbreak. However, it was too late.
The virus has spread to all continents now, except Antarctica.

Q) How is India responding to the outbreak?

India has expanded screening of international travellers. Few Indian travellers who were found with the coronavirus strain have been isolated and treated before their release.

Q) How has it affected the economy?

Worries are mounting that prolonged quarantines, supply chain disruptions and a sharp reduction in tourism and business travel could weaken the global economy or even cause a recession.
