DAMAN & DIU and DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI to be merged

• Recently, a Bill to merge the UTs of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar haveli been introduced in Lok sabha.
• To provide better delivery of services to the citizens of both UTs by producing Improved efficiency and reducing paperwork.

Key points

• Both UT's have separate constitutional & administrative bodies - lead to duplicity, inefficiency, and wasteful expenditure.
• minimum Government, maximum governance.
• small area & less population- the merger is less challenging.

Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli

• These two UTs are located in western India.
• Daman & Diu- two widely separated districts
• Daman- on Gujarat's south coast
• Diu - an island off the southern coast of Gujrat's Kathiawar peninsula. 
• Dadra & Nagar Haveli - Two separate parts 
• Dadra- surrounded by the state of Gujarat
• Nagar Haveli - on borders of Gujarat & Maharashtra.
• Both were colonized bu the Portuguese and were liberated in December 1961.
• In 1987, when Goa got statehood, Daman & Diu were made a separate union territory from the previous union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu.
